JRC Celebrates Black History Month

JRC Celebrates Black History Month

Date: 21 October 2021

Black History Month - an international annual month recognising inspirational individuals and events from within the Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities – was celebrated this month at John Ruskin College.

As part of JRC’s celebrations of Black History Month, students were invited to celebrate their heritage by taking part in our culture sharing get together which took place in the College’s Hub.

It was a great opportunity for students to learn about each other’s backgrounds, cultures and history in a friendly and inclusive environment. To show pride in their heritage, students and staff from a range of backgrounds dressed in clothes reflecting their culture and shared some delicious treats from their countries as well!

Reflecting on the various Black History Month activities which have taken place, Yvonne Porteous, Head of Technical & Vocational Studies said:

"Black History Month and diversity are something we are proud to celebrate here at John Ruskin College. It is important to embrace multiculturalism and to celebrate the achievements and contributions made by black people throughout history".

This get together was a great addition to our Black History Month celebrations including the Intergenerational Event where members of our local community were treated to a pamper day courtesy of our Hair & Beauty Students.

Throughout the month, an exhibition was also on display in the Learning Resource Centre offering information about iconic black figures in history and explaining the importance of this month-long celebration.

The event also coincides with our celebrations of the Association of Colleges’ #CollegesWeek which is a great chance to celebrate all of the brilliant things that colleges do.

Address: John Ruskin College, Selsdon Park Road, South Croydon, CR2 8JJ
