Hairdressing Level 3

Hairdressing Level 3 - Amy

Former School(s): Shirley High School

Our Student Union President for the year 19/20, Amy, embarked on a Level 3 Hairdressing course with JRC as she had previously completed Level 2 at another College and enjoyed “working on clients and making people feel more confident when achieving their desired look.” She moved over to John Ruskin College due to the amazing facilities for the course that I wanted to take” as well as enjoying an Open Event she attended too.

Amy’s favourite elements of the course include “performing treatments on clients and learning the theory behind each treatment” as well as the tutorial sessions because the tutor makes them enjoyable with each week having its own theme.

Thinking about the support Amy receives, she remarked that she found it outstanding from teachers, students and the College itself. Work experience has also been a huge help for Amy, where she’s had a placement at a charity shop enabling her to build on communication and retail skills and has previously had experience in both hair and beauty salons also.

Last year, Amy qualified as a finalist at the AHT competition, held at our partner College, East Surrey College, and then went to Blackpool to compete nationally. She said that the experience “really showed the standard of work in the industry” and it was a lot of fun too.

Alongside her course, Amy has been the Student Union President as she has a passion for change and helping people. She described the role as an eye-opening experience where she has volunteered and led on many themed weeks and events including writing and reading out a poem at the Remembrance Day Ceremony and a Diversity Week Fashion Show.

This insight into a leadership role has led Amy to think about progressing to a Management course at University, after spending a year in the Hair & Beauty industry.
