JRC Students Participate in ‘Trading Places’ Workshop

JRC Students Participate in ‘Trading Places’ Workshop

Date: 10 March 2023

Students from all different departments including Art & Design, Health & Social Care, SEND and Sports attended a drop-in session with The Crib and the MET Police.

A charity organisation from Hackney known as The Crib made a welcoming visit last week accompanied by the MET police to deliver an engaging workshop about forming friendly alliances with the Police. The key insights were the importance of creating these bonds, but also how it could be done.

Topics included individual experiences, the rights in a stop-and-search situation, and a fun and interactive role-playing session where students traded places with the Police and acted out common scenarios and how best to deal with difficult and sensitive situations.

Janette Collins, founder of the Crib commented: “It was nice to meet students at JRC as we are always keen on promoting social inclusion within the local community and this is a great opportunity to do so. The workshop was created to allow us to relate to students informally whilst addressing serious issues.”

Janette and her team were proud to attend John Ruskin College and deliver their workshop ‘Trading Places’ with the police, with the attendance of over 30 students.

Art, Design & Media Level 2 student Mia said: “I enjoyed the workshop a lot! I loved participating in the roleplays I did, they were funny. It was also really nice to speak with the Police officers and find out more about their roles.”

Another student added: “It was an eye-opening event; it was honest and realistic. I learned what needs to be said if I ever get stopped or searched/detained, it was really informative.”
