JRC hosts Hospitality Recruitment Day in partnership with Off to Work

Date: 27 October 2022

On Thursday 20 October 2022, John Ruskin College Youth Employability Hub and Off to Work hosted John Ruskin College’s first-ever Hospitality Recruitment Day. The event was attended by Youth Hub participants, customers, claimants, learners, and our Full-time Level 3 students from our Health and Beauty courses.

The Youth Employability Hub works with the Department of Work and Pensions to support 18–24-year-olds who are the recipients of Universal Credit into work or Full-time education.

Around 15 young people attended the event with offers of work and further training offered to those from the Youth Hub with interested Full-time students being offered the opportunity to attend a London day to get part-time work.

The event consisted of ‘Off to Work’, giving an insight into the industry via practical activities like setting and serving tables, remembering the names of fancy canapes, and offering them out and opening bottles of (fake) wine. They also presented information on the industry including things like dress code, expectations, events, and locations.

The day culminated with those that were interested and successful being signed up to begin working for Off to Work.

Afia Owusu is currently doing the Employability course at JRC and commented about the day:

“Attending the recruitment day course at JRC was really informative, I learnt how to interact with customers, and it enhanced my ability to work well with others. I acquired the skills needed to succeed in the hospitality sector such as taking bookings, setting tables, and dealing with customer enquiries. I was even offered a Waitressing job (by the recruitment company Off to Work) on the day and I am due to start in a few weeks once I finish my Health and Safety training. I plan to work during my gap year and then go to study Philosophy at The University of Warwick next year.”
