Construction - What have they been up to?

Construction - What have they been up to?

Date: 03 May 2022

The Construction Department at John Ruskin College has been busy over the last couple of months, coordinating student projects and carrying out maintenance around the College. Our Basic Construction Skills students had the exciting opportunity of refurbishing a classroom within the College. Using the skills and techniques learned within their lessons, students collectively had to:

  • Remove all furniture from the classroom
  • Sand the walls and workbenches
  • Create filler to fill in any holes or dents
  • Paint all walls, windows frames, and woodwork

Students were given a turnaround time of two months during their lesson time to complete the task and the results can be seen below.

Our Property Maintenance Apprentices were also set an interesting maintenance task to get their teeth into. They were asked to clear out the debris, rubble, and green waste behind the College and on the tennis courts. The Apprentices worked alongside their tutors to clear fences around the College, insert wooden posts into a concrete flooring, and clear the designated area.

The Property Maintenance Apprentices are still working hard on clearing the area to allow the Construction department to continue their developments.

Lastly, the Painting & Decorating students were tasked with using their newly learned skills and techniques to brighten up the Painting & Decorating corridor. Students had to:

  • Prepare the walls and windowsills for decorating
  • Create colour
  • Apply paint by brush and roller to different textured surfaces
  • Produce specialist decorative finishes

Painting & Decorating tutor, Justine Chart was impressed by the students’ collaboration and teamwork. Students demonstrated a high level of professionalism and completed the task within realistic deadlines.
