Black History Month Celebration
This October, departments across both East Surrey College and John Ruskin College came together to acknowledge Black History Month, an annual observance that promotes and celebrates Black contributions to society.
Cultural Event
At East Surrey College and John Ruskin College we hosted our Cultural Event. For this celebration of diversity, students and staff were encouraged to wear their traditional clothes, bring music reflective of their background as well as bring the flag that represents their country.

This was hosted in the Winter Garden at East Surrey College and in the Activity Hub at John Ruskin College. These cultural days were fantastic at both sites, and it was wonderful to see the variety of cultures that came together to share and learn. We want to say a huge thank you to all the staff and students who joined us.

Intergenerational Event at JRC
On 12 October, John Ruskin welcomed members from the local community to be treated and pampered courtesy of our Hair & Media Make-up and Body & Spa students for the third consecutive year.
The intergenerational Event was run in partnership with the Manju Shahul-Hameed Foundation and the Croydon BME Forum. The event brings older and younger generations together, giving them the opportunity to learn about their similarities and differences, whilst also providing a greater understanding and appreciation for each generation. Read more about this fantastic event here.
College displays
It has been fantastic to see the range of art and information on display around both Colleges. Reigate School of Art have created a display in the Winter Garden at East Surrey College highlighting Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
At East Surrey College, the library has a display of books to inspire and educate around Black History Month. This also includes headshots and information about key inspirational individuals.
This too is displayed at John Ruskin College library with a variety of useful resources for staff and students.
