JRC partner with Jobcentre Plus for new Youth Hub
Date: 15 December 2021
John Ruskin College in South Croydon is proud to partner with Jobcentre Plus to deliver a brand-new Youth Hub. This project is part of a wider initiative across Great Britain to help jobseekers access training and job opportunities.
The hub is part of the government’s multi-million-pound Plan for Jobs and is one of dozens of similar hubs being opened across the country.
At the College, the Youth Hub will be a one stop shop for 18-24-year-olds, providing specialist employment advice services to help local young people get back into work. Youth Employability Coaches will support jobseekers in finding the right route for them, whether that be finding a new job, starting an apprenticeship or gaining extra qualifications, they are here to help with that journey.
The types of support jobseekers that may receive includes CV assistance, help with job hunting and interview skill practice all of which are important when getting back into work. Youth Employability Coaches can also refer young people to one of the many courses on offer at the College, including English, Maths and ESOL.
Jobseekers may also start a training programme at the College, aligning with their goals and career aspirations. At John Ruskin College, Construction training courses will be run as part of the Sector-Based Work Academy Programme, where the College will be running in partnership with Willmott Dixon to provide basic skills training in the College's purpose-built workshops.
The Youth Hub is an important development supporting the young people of Croydon and the South London community in getting back to work whilst helping the national effort in rebuilding the workforce following the pandemic.
Jayne Dickinson, Chief Executive and Principal of Orbital South Colleges commented:
“We are delighted to have secured the funding with DWP to support this important initiative. Education and skills will play a key role in kickstarting the economy and careers of young people who have been adversely affected by the pandemic. Here at JRC, our wide range of vocational courses provides the community with the skills and qualifications needed for work. The hub complements our existing courses and strengthens the link between job seekers and employers whilst helping to overcome any barriers young people may face when getting into employment.”
Minister for Employment, Mims Davies MP said:
“Through our enhanced DWP Youth Offer, which included our new DWP Youth Hubs like this one as well as the Kickstart Scheme, we are giving young jobseekers across Croydon the support they need to find employment and access vital training, so they can address any barriers and build their confidence to take the next crucial step into a job.
This is a challenging time for many young people, but with our Plan for Jobs creating new opportunities, boosting skills, and supporting young people getting into work and helping them progress, we’re ready to push to build back better.”
The Youth Hubs are shared spaces with partners including colleges, charities, training providers and local councils, meaning people are able to access a range of services in one location. They form part of the government’s wider support for young jobseekers which will see them appear across the UK in a range of settings ensuring those in need get the necessary support.
John Ruskin College is honoured to play host to this exciting initiative and are looking forward to continue supporting young people in the Croydon area.
