Intergenerational Care Event 2022
Date: 14 October 2022
On 12 October, during Black History Month 2022, John Ruskin College welcomed members from the local community to be treated and pampered courtesy of our Hair & Media Make-up and Body & Spa students for the third consecutive year.
The Intergenerational Event is run in partnership with the Manju Shahul-Hameed Foundation and the Croydon BME Forum. The event brings older and younger generations together, giving them the opportunity to learn about their similarities and differences, whilst also providing a greater understanding and appreciation of each generation.
Toward the start of the event, guests from the BME forum and the local community received a warm welcome from Lindsay Pamphilon, Principal of Orbital South Colleges and Lee McCarthy, Head of Department – Vocational & Technical.
“It’s a pleasure to welcome you to John Ruskin College, I hope you all have a wonderful day with our Hair and Beauty Department, our students will take fantastic care of you, and make sure to tell your friends and family about our excellent facilities.”
Guests were brought to the College’s modern training salon, The Atrium, where guests had a wide range of treatments including manicures, facials, massages, haircuts and some had make-up applied. With this opportunity, students could improve and develop their customer service skills as well as learn new techniques.
Throughout the event, students and guests delved into several conversations about their backgrounds and life stories, along with sharing advice. This was supported by a live Q&A session that took place at the end of the event.
A body & Spa student commented:
“Hearing the stories from the older generation has been really inspiring. I’ve also been able to continue my development in spa techniques and treatments.”
One visitor added:
“I can speak on behalf of all visitors, we all really appreciate every single moment of today, from the start we felt welcomed by the staff and students, the treatments have been lovely, and the students have done a great job!”
We thank the Manju Shahul-Hameed Foundation and the Croydon BME Forum for organising the event. Click to learn more about our Full-time or Part-time Hair and Beauty courses.
