Creative Arts student chosen to represent JRC in iconic Croydon Stands Tall arts trail

Date: 18 August 2023

Exciting news! Get ready to look up and spot a special giant giraffe sculpture designed by one of our very own art & design students, as part of the Croydon Stands Tall arts trail!

Launching on 21 August, this spectacular free trail will see 30 huge giraffes and 30 baby giraffes, decorated by local artists, schools and communities, take centre stage across Croydon town centre for ten weeks this autumn, injecting energy and colour to its streets and spaces.

The journey began earlier this year when Croydon Bid put a call-out to local businesses to sponsor the giraffes. We thought this would be a great opportunity to put our own stamp on one, so took up the sponsorship and ran a competition for our students to find an artist to decorate it.

We received some amazing submissions, and the competition winner was revealed in April as Level 2 Art & Design student Kelvine Bersamin.

Kelvine, who has a passion for architecture as well as art, was thrilled to be chosen for his bold, eye-catching design inspired by the history, growth and spaces of Croydon.  He said:

“I am so excited my design has been chosen to represent John Ruskin College. It’s a great way to showcase my work and become known as an artist!”

Andrew Stockwell, Creative Arts Lecturer, added:

“Kelvine is the perfect candidate to represent JRC in this competition. He's a very hard-working, dedicated student who constantly strives to develop his technical expertise and knowledge of Art and Design. The project is a brilliant link with the real world, which is so important for our students to experience.”
