Careers Fair informs and inspires students on future pathways
Date: 11 May 2023
Our Careers Team has once again drawn on its wealth of contacts and experience for the return of our popular Careers & Jobs Fair on Tuesday 11 May.
Students from across the College were given specific time slots throughout the day to allow different departments the opportunity to meet as many exhibitors as possible.
They had the chance to talk to a wide range of employers and University representatives to discover an array of career and progression opportunities including apprenticeships and higher education.
Attendees were also encouraged to bring along their cvs for advice and feedback from our Careers team.
Imogen, a student recruitment representative from the University of Creative Arts, commented: “The questioning from students was amazing – not only from levels 2 and 3 students but level 1 too. It was really interesting to hear about specific subjects they were interested in and make them aware of the different avenues and opportunities open to them.”
Allan, an exhibitor from The British Army, said: “It was a really beneficial event. We’ve seen a lot of interest from students, especially on engineering and dog handling roles.”
Shafiullah, an ESOL student, remarked: “I want to go into the army, so it was really good to get advice and information about it.”
Jamal, a Level 3 Engineering student, who spoke to representatives from Engineering company Centronic, said: “I enjoyed talking with them and was given a business card so I can get in touch for advice – it’s great to have that connection with businesses.”
Osman, an ESOL student, also with an interest in Engineering, said:
“I found it very useful talking about the different programmes and hearing advice to help make up my mind on which direction I want to take.”
The University stands also got a lot of interest from students. Some were inspired to look into the Uni option further, despite not having considered it before.
Yasmine, a level 1 Art & Design student, said: “This has helped me a lot and given me the confidence to go on to Uni!”
At the end of the event, Carol Hix, Careers and Employability Advisor at John Ruskin College, said: "Many thanks to all exhibitors who attended the Fair today for advising and inspiring our students on the different paths open to them in the future. There was a real buzz in the room throughout the day and it was great to see our students asking questions and being so engaged."
