On 17 June, John Ruskin College’s Creative Arts department opened their doors and welcomed friends and family to explore the highly anticipated End of Year Art Exhibition.
With no two pieces of work the same, it was a fantastic evening full of reflection as guests explored the two rooms which made up the exhibition. Our Creative Arts courses are largely shaped by the student’s interests, with the classroom serving as a place to experiment and develop a particular style or niche.
The exhibition featured a variety of works – from photography collages, papier mache sculptures, trainer designs, cartoonist art, and fashion creations.
The photography collage ‘Made of Memories’ was made by Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design student Emily. The work featured over 1,000 images of her and her loved ones, and was when viewed from across the room, the collage displayed a portrait of Emily. The project highlights how her family and friends have impacted who she is today. It was almost as tall as the ceiling, and popular amongst guests as they stopped to admire how much work it must have taken.
Another crowd favourite was a series of superhero illustrations created by Art and Design Level 3 Year 3 Extended Diploma student Max. The colourful display featured a visible evolution of how superhero franchises such as Marvel have adapted over time.
The exhibition also served as a final goodbye for many of the students who have come to love the Creative Arts community within the college. Since finishing up their studies, many students have already accepted offers from a variety of creative universities where they will continue to develop their artistic skills.
Jo Fenwick, Director of Learning for the Creative Arts department, was blown away by the talent shown at the exhibition. She reflected on the experience with high praise, adding, “it was beautifully presented and the work was great to see. It was so good to hear the students talking about their work, their excellent progress, and their impressive plans for next year.”
