The College is delighted to support National Careers Week 2021 by giving students the opportunity to access the National Careers Week programme of activities. Students are booked in to hear from industry experts and take part in virtual activities to support their chosen area of interest. Each day students are hearing from different employers and organisations and we will share highlights of these throughout the week on this page.
Monday 1 March
Today we gave our students the opportunity to get involved in a range of career talks as part of #NCW2021. We shared videos including career insights into Hairdressing and Creative Studies as well as talks on Business and Sport Management from UA92 in Manchester and a look at Digital Media courses at the University of Sheffield.
We also organised a talk for our Art students with the British Library, where speakers Liz & Nicole spoke to the students all about the conservation work they do on books, tapestries and a range of textiles and written works.
There was also a wonderful short film presented by #NationalCareersWeek called 'HOPE', taken from last year's event, still holding relevance for our current lockdown. Watch the film here.
Tuesday 2 March
There were talks on offer for a variety of subjects today, including Henry Boot PLC regarding construction employer insights! There was also some great general information available to all JRC students on interview techniques and an introduction to LinkedIn, presented by Microsoft.
Taking a look at Higher Education, The University of Sheffield offered a talk on careers in Engineering too, whilst the Northern School of Art gave students the opportunity to explore their creative careers.
Wednesday 3 March
One of the highlights from today's available talks was a presentation run by the NHS about the different routes into the sector! This was offered to all of our students for a variety of roles, not just healthcare.
There were also some fantastic workshops about setting goals for the year and writing a great CV and cover letter, to help build on those essential skills needed for employment.
Finally, students tuned into a talk with one of our previous students, Jonathan Brown, who spoke about his career progression and how to persevere in times of change. Jonathan now works for Vodafone Group as a Marketing Consultant, having previously studied IT with our College.
Thursday 4 March
There were exciting opportunities for our STEM students on offer, with live webinars on Careers in STEM and Engineering. Our Sport students had the chance to join a live talk with Football Manager Chris Casper, as well as an interview with Gary Neville!
We were re-joined by Enterprise Advisor, Fiona McNicol, who shared her experience of setting up her own business. This was a really valuable talk for our entrepreneurial students, as she shared how important a business plan is.
Friday 5 March
Friday was packed with talks available for everyone to gain career insights and broaden their horizons. With talks on offer from Staffordshire University, NHS and CodeNation, there was so much for our students to get involved in.
The final day of National Careers Week was also an opportunity to reflect on the careers skills our students have learned and share some inspiring words from NCW.
