MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE STUDENT PARTNERSHIP, MO

Hi, I’m Mo, the President of the Student Partnership at JRC. John Ruskin College not only provides a high quality education but also encourages students to step out of their comfort zone through an exciting range of extra curricular activities known as Enrichment.

The Student Partnership Council consists of an amazing range of students who are elected to take on various roles. We meet every Tuesday in the Boardroom and we discuss important issues relating to the learner experience. We are always open to new ideas. Come and see us in Student Services!

AHT COMPETITION

The Hair and Beauty Department at John Ruskin College were very proud to host the Semi Finals of the Southern heats of the National AHT Awards (Association of Hairdressers and Therapists) which took place on Monday 4th February.

14 of our learners qualified to attend the finals in Blackpool on Monday 11th March.

Shelly Agneau-Wilson, both Hairdressing Tutor at John Ruskin College and Southern Area Director of the competition says. “Experiences like these help students to realise both the excitement as well as the rigorous demands of the commercial world.”

SPORTS ENRICHMENT

The JRC football team finished 2nd in the KCAA multi sports tournament! The boys were undefeated all the way to the final where we only lost out on penalties. Great job!

The boys will now compete in the Strodes Multi Sports tournament against the best teams in the county, GOOD LUCK GUYS!

ALUMNI SUCCESS

We spoke with one of our former students, Becky, who completed a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport with us last year.

Since leaving College, she’s been working as a qualified control room officer for the London Fire Brigade.

She told us: “This involves answering 999 calls from members of the public and dispatching appropriate brigade appliances to the incident.

My Sports course has helped me to get where I am now because of the many life lessons it has taught me. Through Sport I have learnt to have respect, discipline, courage, resilience and have developed my decision making skills. These are all life skills which helped me to be successful in my interview and achieve my dream job”.

DIVERSITY WEEK

On the week commencing the 11th of March, we had our Diversity week, where we had lots of celebrations.

Events included, coming to College in your national dress, ‘Guess the flag’ game and sticking dots on a map indicating where you were born. It was interesting to note that the students who took part in our activity demonstrated they were from 70 different places around the world.

We also had lots of conversations around diversity with students describing what diversity means to them. It was a great week and a huge celebration of who we are!!

AWARDS EVENING IS COMING!

Letters have already been sent out to all Award Winners to attend our annual Awards Evening ceremony that will be held on Tuesday 18th June 2019.

Please see Sally Obertell, Director of Marketing if you haven’t received your letter!

Our Level 3 Year 1 Digital Media students visited MET Film School at Ealing Studios.

They were taken on a tour of the site which included visiting a working studio, meeting and chatting with current students learning about special effects and found out about the fantastic opportunities in front of and behind the camera that the film school has to offer.

We’re hoping to go back for a masterclass soon as all the students had a great time!

TEACH TOO

Our Level 3 Year 2 Health & Social Care students had a great time attending the Teach Too Careers event at East Surrey College.

It was a great opportunity for them to meet a variety of Health Care professionals.
