Mary Poplockinz
Performed at the Croydon Clocktower – Braithwaite Hall
13th July, 7.30pm
- Director - Stewart Burgess
- Assistant Director - Delores Kumah
(Both members of staff, teaching on the BTEC Awards in Performing Arts at John Ruskin College)
The production was a whole new world of dance, song and rhyme. Mary Poppins like you’ve never seen her before!!
It was an original performance devised by staff and students at the college. The plot was loosely based on the Mary Poppins story about rescuing a family in trouble. The idea was initiated by students, involved in the Enrichment Programme. This is an additional programme of activities that students can engage in, in addition to their academic studies.
The cast, involved students from the BTEC Performing Arts courses in Drama and Dance as well as the John Ruskin College Youth Dance Crew.
An interesting mix of humour and pathos was experienced by the audience. Various styles of dance i.e. soca, popping and locking, street and contemporary ballet were combined with drama and some powerful vocal performances.
The Director, Stewart Burgess said it was amazing that the students were able to put together the show in such a short space of time – 8 weeks to be exact.
John Ruskin College would like to thank Oliver Tipper, the Arts Education Officer at the Clocktower and we all look forward to becoming involved in other projects at the Clocktower in the next academic year.
