Launch of the Career Academy UK at John Ruskin College

15th July 2008
Business leaders and staff at John Ruskin College gathered early on Tuesday 1st July for a Business breakfast to celebrate the launch of the Career Academy UK.
Career Academies UK is a national charity working with 90 schools and colleges around the UK aiming to raise the aspirations of 16-19 year olds.
By adopting the Career Academy model, the college will be supported to provide an enhanced programme for a specially selected group of business students. The programme will include 6 week paid internships as well as mentoring, business related visits and activities.
A local advisory board has been established to act as advocates of the Career Academy with the task of leveraging corporate and community connexions. Both the college and the businesses involved benefit from the partnership. Students are given different perspectives and are made more aware of the options available to them as well as a glimpse into the world of work. Employers have the opportunity to put something back into the talent pool from which they recruit, and to enhance staff development by working with interns. With many companies becoming more aware of their social responsibility, the Career Academy allows them to fulfil this obligation.
After a presentation by Rhiannon Evans from Career Academies UK, there was an opportunity to network over breakfast. College principal, Jennifer Sims said “This is an exciting venture for the college and we are very much looking forward to the benefits that the Career Academy can bring our business students.”
