On 25th June, 120 gifted and talented students from 9 local schools gathered at John Ruskin College for the Croydon Science and Technology Challenge Day. The event was run by MCS Projects who work with schools, businesses and colleges to raise youngsters’ aspirations.

After being divided into mixed school teams, the pupils were asked to solve 4 complex science and engineering problems: designing a self-righting buoy, a paper bridge, a solar powered vehicle and a robot. It was a great opportunity for pupils to mix with other schools, to work as a team and to give them a taste of college life too.

Deputy Major of Croydon, Councillor Robert Askey (himself a former student at John Ruskin College) was there to congratulate the winners and award certificates of participation at the end-of-challenge presentation.

The winning team included Akash Mehta and Omar Foster from St Josephs Colleg and Gaya Saresh and Katie Lee-Sang from the Harris City Academy. This was one of a number of Challenge Days being run across London and winning teams will gather for the final later on this year.
