John Ruskin College student awarded a Helena Kennedy Award
8th December 2008
Ricky Grant, a student at John Ruskin College was one of the award winners during the Helena Kennedy Foundation 10th Anniversary awards 2008. Ricky’s achievements were celebrated a the House of Lords on 22nd October where the Foundation’s President Baroness Helena Kennedy QC, presented him with a certificate.
Ricky has visual impairment from a detached retina in his left eye and has poor vision in his right eye. As a result of the bursary, Ricky was able to purchase special software to magnify the text on his computer.
This helped supplement the support he already received from the Learning Support Team at John Ruskin College who took notes during class and enlarged handouts for him.
Husnara Mansoor, Ricky’s maths teacher said: “Ricky is a conscientious student who has a mature attitude towards his studies and deserves to succeed”.
Ricky is now studying Religious Studies and Theology at Roehampton University after which he hopes to become a teacher.
The Helena Kennedy Foundation was set up to help support disadvantaged students through their higher education in the form of bursaries. This year the Foundation received over 250 applications and was able to offer a record number of bursaries, with 130 people receiving awards.
