John Ruskin College (JRC) will be celebrating the Colleges Week by highlighting examples of personal and academic skills that the students have developed during their studies and paying tribute to the amazing journeys some of them had to make to reach their target.

Duran Abdullah, a 2nd year student in the BTEC National Award in Dance, spoke about how being part of John Ruskin College enhanced her communication skills. “In the creative arts department within the college, you really feel that you are noticed as an individual. Since I began college, I have developed great communication skills and confidence through the help of my teachers.”

Katie Moores, a 1st year student currently also studying the BTEC National Award in Dance, said: “Before I came to John Ruskin College I was only familiar with classical ballet. At the college I got to meet a diverse range of people and was exposed to different styles of dance which has made me a more skilled dancer.

Another student, Yesim Gunduz a 2nd year student studying Business (BTEC National Diploma) said: “Ever since I started college I feel more confident and I am not as shy as before.”

Jennifer Simms, the Principal of John Ruskin College said: “We’re proud to be part of Colleges Week and think this week long celebration can play a key role in demonstrating the valuable role colleges play in unlocking talent. Our great strength as a college is in giving students the skills they need to progress on to university and/or to employment. Each of our students has many talents – our expertise is in helping them develop those talents so that they can achieve their full potential.”

National Colleges Week is taking place 10-16 November to celebrate the role colleges play in unlocking talent in communities and transforming the lives of learners. Colleges Week is being co-ordinated and organised by the Association of Colleges (AoC), the Department for Innovation, Universities & Skills (DIUS) and the Learning & Skills Council (LSC).
