Young Poets get Published
19th February 2007
Eight budding poets from John Ruskin College have been successful in the Young Writers '2007 A Poetry Odyssey' competition. The competition, open to 11-18 years olds, invited poems on any subject up to 30 lines in length to be submitted for consideration for this year’s regional anthology. The competition was fierce with 11,728 entries being submitted and of these, 261 have been chosen to be published in the publication "2007: A Poetry Odyssey Surrey". Eight of these were students from John Ruskin College:
- Lauren Bryson - New Life
- Oluwaseyi Adarijo-Akindele - Everything to Me
- William Perrin - Poison Heart
- Angela Wiafe - What is This?
- Ben Lane - Vigilante
- Aisha Abid - My Love
- Leah Leven-Martins - Freedom
- Joshua Jackson - Featherless Dream
Each successful student received a certificate, book mark and voucher giving half price subscription to Wordsmith magazine. The anthology is due to be published at the end of April, after which 5 overall winners will be chosen to receive £20 for best poem. Fifteen schools will be selected from across the country to receive £1,000 for best overall group of entries.
Young Writers was established in 1991 to encourage the reading and writing of poetry by young people. By publishing their work, the competition aims to motivate students and boost confidence in their creative writing abilities.
Jennifer Sims, Principal of the college said "It is wonderful that the talents of our students have been recognised in this way. We are proud that so many entries have been selected from our college".
