Lucy Ash, BBC Radio Documentary Maker and Presenter visits John Ruskin College
19th February 2007
On 26th January, media students from John Ruskin College were treated to a fascinating presentation by BBC radio documentary maker and presenter Lucy Ash.
Lucy shared clips from her award winning programme on the dowry system in India which she made for BBC Radio 4’s 'Crossing Continents' programme. She played some very harrowing and yet riveting audio clips from women who had been burnt following either self harm or murder attempts. This was a real demonstration of the power of radio.
Her travels have also taken her to Transdniester, to explore life in this largely unrecognised region of Moldova (formerly part of the Soviet Union) which receives little help from the outside world. Lucy also shared her experiences of going undercover to discover what life was like in Turkmenistan.
Lucy’s obvious passion for her work inspired both staff and students alike and her talk prompted some interesting debate about the impact of her work in the countries she’s reported on. Her visit provided valuable insight into the work of BBC reporters and she gave advice on how to pursue a career in the media.
'I found her talk and presentation really inspiring' said Lucy Brako, an AS Media Studies student after the talk. Brendan Horstead, Curriculum Team Manager for Creative Arts and English wholeheartedly agreed.
