John Ruskin College’s Best Learner Awards
4th May 2006
The importance of recognising student achievement is a key principle of John Ruskin College and this was demonstrated at the annual Best Learners ceremony on Thursday 4th May.
A student was chosen from each of the curriculum teams who had shown outstanding commitment to their studies, demonstrated selflessness in helping others in the College, or who had been an inspiration to others.
The winners included: Emma Baines (Humanities), Shirley Brown Taylor (Business), Nicol Pooley (Creative Arts), Jodianne Griffiths (Science and Maths), Samantha O'Brien (Social Sciences) and Jaimie Cornish (14-16 year old Increased flexibility programme).
Following glowing reports from each of the Curriculum Team Leaders, Bob Fairbrother, Vice Chairperson of the Governors made the presentations to the six winners. Staff and parents were duly proud of the students' achievements.
Punctuating the event were two solo dance performances. The first was choreographed and danced by Marina Danckwardt called 'A Lonely Happy Childhood' and was based on a poem by EE Cummings. The second, entitled 'Music' was devised by Natasha Bourne for her AS Dance Exam and was based on British Sign Language.
The event culminated in a special draw to select one of the Best Learners to represent the College at the South London Colleges Best Learner Awards at the House of Commons on 25th May. The lucky winner was Shirley Brown Taylor. We congratulate all the Best Learners on their Awards and wish them continued success throughout their careers.
