Message from the Principal and Chief Executive, Mohammed Ramzan
Our first term back has been extremely busy with lots of exciting trips, events and activities.
Students are working incredibly hard and final touches are being made to those all important University or job applications for our Year 13 students.
Students and Staff have been recently involved in Skills Week which was organised by our Work Based Learning team, preparing students for the world of work and providing them with valuable interview experience.
Can I take this opportunity to thank the many Employers and Agencies who were involved in this event and contributed to the student journey.
My message to students and staff this year is a simple one, let’s continue to be ambitious and raise the bar in terms of what we can achieve together, with teaching and learning that challenges, excites and inspires.
I know that I can rely on the support of parents and carers as we embark on this journey, in helping us to reinforce the importance of achieving 100% attendance and punctuality.
I look forward to meeting more of you in the coming weeks and months.
Finally best wishes for the forthcoming festivities and I look forward to welcoming you back to College on 3rd January.
Children in Need Fundraising
This year for Children in Need the students transformed John Ruskin College into Alice in Wonderland.
Students made props, cakes and created a magical world.
Events included pin the smile on the Cheshire Cat, find the White Rabbit and for those who were brave enough, a chilli eating contest.
Well done to all our students and staff that took part in raising money for Children in Need!!!
Jack Petchey Awards
Well done to our past and present students who recently attended the Jack Petchey Awards ceremony at Crystal Palace. It was an evening of entertainment, motivational talks and celebration where all learners were recognised for their outstanding and selfless contributions.
INTO Film Festival
Our Digital Media students attended events at the INTO Film Festival in November.
They watched a number of films at the British Film Institute and participated in The Academy’s Film Career Summit at Regent Street’s Cinema, getting an insight into film from the sets of ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘The Revenant’, ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ and ‘Mr Turner’.
John Ruskin College students participated in International Conference in Holland
Five students and two members of staff spent six days in Arnhem, 12th-18th September, representing Croydon at the annual ‘Youcee’ International Youth conference, in commemoration of the second world war, in particular the battle of Arnhem in 1944. The link between Croydon and Arnhem has existed since 1946 after both towns suffered extensive war damage in WW2.
The trip included Army training, taking part in a Model United Nations debate, witnessing a parachute drop at Ginkel Heath and attending commemoration services for the fallen soldiers where students were chosen to lay wreaths. The opportunity to develop team building skills and presentation skills was a key part of their experience as well as forming friendships with people from all around the world. One of the students, Angel, our current Student President was selected to read a poem at the Polish memorial service.
Xavier Tinto, our Student activities and Sports Leader who accompanied them on the trip said, “It was a joy to see our learners grow in confidence as they all had to lead on activities”.
Mohammed Ramzan, Principal and Chief Executive of John Ruskin College commented, “The College feels very privileged to be part of such a prestigious international event each year”.
Our Level 2 Beauty students have been involved in training sessions this term, learning how to do manicures and pedicures, as well as receiving Dermalogica training alongside the Level 3 students.
Level 3 Body and Spa Therapies students have also been engaged in Hydro Therapy assessments at the De Vere Selsdon Estate.
Another highlight of the term was when our students dressed up for Halloween during their client sessions!!!
Well done to our Sports Teams: The Girls’ Football team, the Boys’ Football team and the Basketball team who have won several of their tournaments and away games this term. Great job guys!
Higher Education Fair
38 exhibitors from various companies and Universities kindly attended our Higher Education Fair on 10th October. This was a beneficial and informative event for our students, in helping them with their future career choices.
Skills Week started with over 200 of our students attending the Skills London Event on 24th Nov, engaging in lots of interactive activities. Plenty of different industries were involved so there was something for everyone. This was followed by a week involving guest speakers, interview practice and workshops for all our students.
