There has been an explosion of interest and investment in sport in recent years and as a result there are excellent opportunities for you to enjoy a successful and rewarding career in this field.
With the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games coming to London and growth in the number of professional sports people in the UK, the number of jobs in Sports Support, Development, Fitness and Coaching will continue to rise - so if you want a challenging and fun career, the Sports Department is the place to be.
Aims of the Department
Sports students at John Ruskin College do more than just a BTEC. They also benefit from exposure to all facets of the sports industry whilst developing their skills for employment or further studies at university.
What can you study in this Academy?
- BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports Development, Coaching and Fitness
- BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport
- NVQ Level 2 in Coaching, Teaching & Instruction (Football) *
- NVQ Level 2 Instructing Exercise & Fitness (Gym based or exercise to music)
- Foundation Diploma in Sport & Active Leisure

- A ‘Warm Up Step up’ programme designed to prepare and expose applicants early to University
- A progression agreement which makes John Ruskin Sports students preferred applicants to St Mary’s, Greenwich, Kingston, Roehampton and London South Bank Universities

Curriculum Enhancement:
- Outdoor & adventurous activity. Residential visits to Kent & Cornwall
- Launching a faux-company to deliver a large charitable sports event involving potential employers
- A Leadership Department that will enable you to travel, participate and volunteer in a lot of events and gain new qualifications such as a Level 2 BTEC Event Support Qualification
- Delivering activity sessions in partnership with local schools such as Selsdon High, Haling Manor High, Harris Academies - South Norwood and Crystal Palace, St Mary’s High, BRIT, Archbishop Tenison, St Andrews High
- The chance to complete a Community Sport Leader Award through Sports Leaders UK
- The possibility of having a 70–hours placement as the Competition Manager’s Assistant in South London, coordinating and organising competitions within and between boroughs
