Hair and Beauty is an exciting industry to be a part of. This is an area where a large team of creative individuals make a valuable contribution to raising confidence, self esteem and the enhancement of personal image through providing specialised services and treatments.

The new Hair & Beauty Department at John Ruskin College with state of the art facilities and resources is the place to take your first steps in becoming a member of this team.

The introduction of a Spa and Sauna facility is another exciting development in this Department, as it ties in with new courses being offered.

The Department will provide a career focused route, and develop the technical and nontechnical skills to enable you to successfully enter the world of Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy.

Skills for Life / GCSE

John Ruskin College is a Skills for Life College. As a key part of your course you will be fully supported to enhance your English, Maths and ICT skills, leading towards a qualification where appropriate.

Learners on a L3 programme will be able to resit GCSE Maths, providing:

They have a L2 Skills for Life qualification e.g. Functional Skills, Adult Numeracy, etc or;
They have achieved a D in Maths in June 2012

Learners on a L3 programme will be able to resit GCSE English, providing:

They have a L2 Skills for Life qualification e.g. Functional Skills, Adult Literacy, etc.

City & Guilds Level 1 Certificate - Introduction to Hair and Beauty
Area of Study: This course will provide an insight into the services of hair and facial treatments, manicure, pedicure and presenting a professional image.
City & Guilds Level 1 NVQ Certificate in Hairdressing / Barbering
Area of Study: To achieve this qualification you will: assist the stylist with perming and colouring services, shampooing, conditioning, blow-drying, preparing and maintaining the work area and presenting a professional image.
City & Guilds Level 1 NVQ Certificate in Beauty Therapy
Area of Study: To achieve this qualification you will: assist with skin care treatments, nail treatments preparing and maintaining the work area and presenting a professional image.
City & Guilds Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy
Area of Study: To achieve this qualification you will: provide a range of services and treatments; manicure, pedicure, waxing, facial treatments, whilst maintaining health and safety and preparing and maintaining the work area and presenting a professional image.
City & Guilds Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing
Area of Study: To achieve this qualification you will: provide a range of services and treatments; colouring, perming, relaxing, styling and cutting, whilst maintaining health and safety and preparing and maintaining the work area and presenting a professional image.
City & Guilds Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering
Area of Study: To achieve this qualification you will: provide a range of services and treatments; colouring, perming, relaxing, styling, removal of facial hair and cutting, whilst maintaining health and safety and preparing and maintaining the work area and presenting a professional image.
City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing
Area of Study: To achieve this qualification you will: provide a range of services and treatments; monitor procedures to safely control work operations; promote additional services or products to clients; creatively cut hair using a combination of techniques; colour hair using a variety of techniques; provide colour correction services; creatively style and dress hair; creatively dress long hair; develop and enhance your creative hairdressing skills; create a variety of permed effects; provide creative hair extension services; contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities.
City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy General
Area of Study: To achieve this qualification you will: monitor procedures to safely control work operations; contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities; provide body electrical treatments; provide facial electrical treatments; provide body massage treatments; provide electrical epilation treatments; provide UV tanning services; carry out massage using pre-blended aromatherapy oils; provide stone therapy treatment; contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business.
City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Spa Therapy
Area of Study: To achieve this qualification you will: promote additional services or products to clients; monitor procedures to safely control work operations; provide body massage treatments; provide stone therapy treatment; monitor clients and the operation of sauna, steam and hydrotherapy; provide body wrapping and flotation treatments; provide body electrical treatments; provide facial electrical treatments; carry out massage using pre-blended aromatherapy oils; contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business.
City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Make-Up
Area of Study: To achieve this qualification you will: monitor procedures to safely control work operations; contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities; design and create fashion and photographic make-up; provide specialist skin camouflage services; carry out massage using pre-blended aromatherapy oils; provide stone therapy treatment; provide UV tanning services; contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business; provide female intimate waxing services; provide self tanning services; provide single eyelash extension treatments; plan and provide airbrush make-up; provide body electrical treatments; provide facial electrical treatments.
