Governance: New Developments for 2010/11

The College has recently had the opportunity to be part of an LSIS pilot programme entitled the Learning Board. This is based on the concept that board members that work more effectively as a team are able to provide a better level of governance and strategic leadership. The programme identified five areas of activity which underpin the “learning board” and form the basis of outstanding governance.

The pilot involved members completing questionnaires; being interviewed; and Board meetings being observed. The intention of the programme was to provide the Board with a model and structured process and provide meaningful feedback on some key aspects of effective board performance.

The LSIS report has been comprehensively reviewed by the Governing Body at a specially convened Strategic Review Day held on 12th February 2011 and from that the Governing Body have identified key short term objectives that are to be encapsulated in a robust Governance Quality Improvement Plan.

In addition, the Governing Body agreed that for 2010/11 they will suspend meetings of the non-statutory Committees in order that the Corporation can meet in a corporate mode on a 6/8 week frequency. The intention has been to focus on vision and mission, delivery and monitoring of the strategic plan and to strike a clear boundary between ends and means, management and governance.
